Security at Home

When working remotely, it's important to make sure you are working securely. What does this mean?

Device security:

  • Whenever possible, use a University-owned computer.
  • If you do not have access to a University-owned computer, you can set up Remote Desktop Support on Windows or Mac to connect to your work computer.
  • If you must use a personal computer:
    • Limit logging on to a minimal number of University services. The most common will be email, Office 365 online, U of I Box, Google Apps, and Zoom for example.
    • Limit the number and types of files you download or upload to University resources from your personally owned computer.
    • Do not download any sensitive data or materials to your personal computer.
  • Do not use public WiFi (like coffeehouses, restaurants, libraries, or airports) when possible.
  • Keep your password private. Only submit your password to a recognized University login screen (like Shibboleth or Microsoft Outlook).
  • Watch out for suspicious email. You will get more email if you are working remotely, but make sure that emails aren't trying to trick you. See the Phishing page for more information.
