Wednesday, July 15th
1.00 – 2.00 pm CT
Presenter:
Denice Ward

Denice Ward Hood is a teaching associate professor in EPOL. Her first online teaching experience was in 2003 at Northern Arizona University. She is the faculty program leader for the Diversity & Equity online degree.

Engaging, thoughtful discussion is a valuable pedagogical component in online courses. When it works well, the benefits are obvious in student learning outcomes as well as their satisfaction with the course. However, students may demonstrate reluctance to participate in discussions and the quality of their posts can vary considerably throughout the term. Additionally, there can be significant work-load issues associated with developing, monitoring and assessing hundreds of discussion posts in an online course. In this talk, we’ll explore some strategies to facilitate discussion and mitigate some of the instructor work-load challenges.
